Ann Lightfoot, the mother of former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, died Monday night after a long illness. She was 95 years old.

“Our entire family and my mother’s many friends and colleagues mourn the loss of Ann Lightfoot, who throughout her life exemplified to us the value of hard work, perseverance and faith,” Lori Lightfoot said in a statement. “We will miss him deeply, but his legacy lives on in each of us who loved him dearly.

Told by daughter Ann Lightfoot, a fiercely determined and religious woman, emigrated from the South with her husband Elijah, fleeing racism and seeking better opportunities. The couple settled in Massillon, a small working-class city in Ohio, about 400 miles east of Chicago.

Ann Lightfoot worked as a nurse’s aide and once served as a member of Massillon’s school board. She and her husband had four children together and raised their family in a low-income white neighborhood of the racially segregated city. The youngest, born in 1962, became the first lesbian black woman to serve as mayor of a major US city.

In her 2019 inaugural address, Lori Lightfoot credited her mother for instilling the values ​​of loyalty, integrity and hard work.

“She is my role model, my champion,” Lori Lightfood said. “The woman who has dreams and high expectations for me, who pushes me into life.”

Elijah Lightfoot died in 2009.

Johnson, who presided over Wednesday’s City Council meeting, called on council members to observe a moment of silence for Ann Lightfoot as the council wrapped up remarks for Black History Month.

Johnson noted that replacing Lori Lightfoot marks the first transition of power from one elected Black mayor to another in Chicago history.

“In that spirit, as we recognize former Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s leadership, we also mourn the loss of her mother today,” Johnson said.

Lori Lightfoot said in a statement that she appreciated the “messages of well wishes and condolences.”

“Our mother was a devout, faithful woman, and we believe she achieved greater glory,” Lori Lightfoot said.
