GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Chicago White Sox pitcher Dylan Cease said he received a call from general manager Chris Getz on Tuesday morning.

“(He) kind of let me know, just said there were rumors going around,” Cease said.

As new trade speculation emerged, the right-hander went to practice for the Sox against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night.

It had the sharpest look of spring. And that’s saying something.

Cease struck out eight on 3 1/3 shooting in a 14-1 win at Goodyear Ballpark.

He allowed one run on two hits and walked one hit in the 63-pitch outing. He has a 2.16 ERA in three spring starts, striking out 14 batters in 8 1/3 innings.

To stop is a popular player in trade talks all out of season. this buzz It looked like he was unfollowed. Spring training began shortly thereafter. However, as the season approached, news of the talks resurfaced.

He never thought he wouldn’t start on Tuesday.

“It’s not that big of a deal,” Cease said. “So, it’s out of my control. I actually just want to perform. Either way, I don’t see it as a negative.”

Before the game, coach Pedro Grifol said he was not worried about issues such as trade speculation.

“I don’t think Cease is too worried about it either,” Grifol said. “He’s the perfect guy for this because his feet are where they are. I’m where my feet are. This is where we are now, this is what we need to do to prepare ourselves for our opening day. We are doing this.

“If there is something going on in the league, at No. 1, I really don’t know because I don’t read any of it. But if something is happening in the league, it’s not something we can control.”

Grifol named Interception the team’s opening day starter long before camp starts. Asked if he expects Cease to still be on top in the March 28 game against the Detroit Tigers at Guaranteed Rate Field, Grifol said: “I don’t know. I mean, how do I know that? I don’t know what’s going to happen there. I don’t know where the other teams are, what their urgency is.

“I have no idea. I leave that to our major league scouts, our general manager and the front office. My focus is right here on this team, making sure we check every box. Targets that I think we need to check off before opening day. I’m not focused on that.”

Cease’s focus was squarely on the Reds.

He featured a 97 mph fastball while striking out two in the first inning.

Cease allowed a solo home run to Jonathan India in the second inning, which also included three strikeouts.
