Community celebrates Homewood-Flossmoor state basketball championship

Dozens of students, parents and community members packed the Homewood-Flossmoor High School auditorium Sunday to celebrate the date.

The previous evening, the boys basketball team captured the 4A state championship by defeating Normal Community, 60-48. It was the school’s first basketball championship win and the second recorded this century, the first coming in 2004.

“It was an honor to be a part of this experience,” said athletic director Matthew Lyke. “The Viking community is proud of each and every one of you.”

The meeting went quickly, but attendees said it was important to come to support the team and the school.

“I think it’s important to come out,” said junior forward Javiyah Israel, who wasn’t even alive when the basketball team last declared. “We support our school to make history.”

Hubert Stalling didn’t go to HF, but he has one student enrolled and he’s the vice president of the Homewood-Flossmoor Parents Association, so he was already a fan. He said it was great to see the auditorium seats filled with so many faces from the community on Sunday.

“It’s important to show support for these kids,” he said. “They did a great job.”

But he said he wasn’t surprised by the turnout to celebrate a win that wasn’t confirmed until the night before.

“The Homewood-Flossmoor community is a very supportive community,” Stalling said.

Head Coach Jamere Dismukes said he has high hopes for the title this year, but a state win is not guaranteed and he has no prepared statement.

“I just found out I was going to speak an hour ago,” he laughed before turning serious.

“I really appreciate all of you,” he said. “Every day is a grind, and I think the kids really understood that, they understood the grind, and they treated it the same way.”

In fact, he said this year has had its share of disappointments, including last year’s 77-47 loss to Gonzaga Prep, but those losses have galvanized the team.

“Every practice after every defeat was amazing,” Dismukes said. “Really, after every defeat, these boys fought. “I think the one word you heard me say throughout the year was resilience, not just from the players but from the staff as well.”

He said the school staff and community support never wavered, and that means a lot.

Senior Addison Collins was in the crowd and said she was dating No. 3 pick Mac Hagemaster.

“It’s really amazing to see the community we have here and the support around us,” Collins said.

Dismukes told the crowd to get used to meetings. This win is the start of a trend.

“Homewood-Flossmoor has all the tools and resources to do this year after year. “We can do this every year,” he said. “After our last practice, I told our seniors, I told all those guys to fight hard, play hard when we go to state because this is your first time playing here and this is your last. “But I told the guys to fight hard and play hard because you’ll be back next year.”

As the meeting came to a close, the crowd chanted “We are HF” as the Viking players walked off the stage, state trophy in hand and first-time champions.
