Goodman Theatre’s house staff petitions to unionize

[ad_1]

The Chicago Local 2 chapter of the International Union of Theatrical Stage Employees has filed a petition to organize the front office, box office and concession staff of Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. The unionization effort at Goodman follows similar successful efforts at Steppenwolf Theater and other nonprofit arts organizations.

“We look forward to representing Goodman’s frontline employees and providing them with a fair, collective bargaining agreement,” said Craig P. Carlson, IATSE chief operating officer.

A vote among affected employees is expected to be held soon.

“We respect our employees and will move forward with the appropriate process,” said Roche Schulfer, Goodman’s longtime executive director.

The Goodman Theater employs a mix of concession workers and box office workers, as well as paid house staff and volunteer ushers. The size of the new unit will remain subject to negotiation but is expected to be around 50 people. IATSE already has a contract with Goodman covering many backstage workers and has long worked with the Actors Equity Association for performers and stage managers.
