Holiday events begin in earnest this weekend; Ice skating at Millennium Park (weather permitting) and Christkindlmarket in Daley Plaza are among the events we’ve included here.

This year’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, in its 89th year, will feature marching bands, the return of giant balloons, floats, equestrian artists, performances by country music artists Reyna Roberts and Tayler Holder and more.

A new musical based on the cartoon character Betty Boop is opening in Chicago on its way to Broadway. It is directed by Jerry Mitchell (“Kinky Boots”) and stars Jasmine Amy Rogers.

If you love all things Disney, a new 90-minute walk-through attraction is opening at the Exhibition Hub Arts Center, featuring galleries devoted to Disney rides from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (1937) to “Encanto” (2021). . Plus nearly 250 works of art, artwork, memorabilia, costumes and props from the last 100 years of Disney.

The world’s oldest blues and jazz company is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a holiday party. The cast includes Mud Morganfield, Jimmy Burns, Demetria Taylor, Sheryl Youngblood, Dave Specter, Mike Wheeler and many more.

Broadway star Stephanie J. Block will receive the 2023 Sarah Siddons Community Award for her achievements in the theater at a ceremony at the Chicago Arts Club, as part of the long-running annual Chicago arts supporters annual fundraiser.

Viewers watch as Chicago's Christmas tree is lit in Millennium Park on November 18, 2022.

As in past years, the big lighting event in Millennium Park will be accompanied by holiday music, entertainment and fireworks. This year’s 110th City of Chicago Christmas Tree is a 40-foot Colorado Blue Spruce donated by the De La Cruz family of southwest suburban Darien. And new this year, there will be a main stage right next to the tree with the ceremony hosted by WBBM-CBS Channel 2’s Irika Sargent and Joe Donlon.

17.00-18.00 pre-show; 6-6:30pm ceremony and tree lighting fireworks show on November 17 at 6:25pm on Washington Street at Michigan Avenue in Millennium Park. The tree will remain lit until January 7, 2024; More information at chicago.gov

The annual parade has already kicked off the holiday shopping season and all the holiday lights on Michigan Avenue. The head attendants are, as always, Disney’s Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Plus famous performances from Sister Sledge, “Good Vibrations” by the Funky Bunch, Sugarhill Gang celebrating hip hop’s 50th anniversary, and “American Idol” alum Colin Stough.

Nov. 18 will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Oak Street and Michigan Avenue, ending with fireworks at Wacker Drive and the Chicago River at 7 p.m.; free, for more information: themagnificentmile.com
