Joffrey Ballet’s 2024-25 season opens with ‘Atonement’ plus return of ‘Alice’ and ‘Nutcracker’ – Chicago Tribune

The Joffrey Ballet on Monday announced its upcoming 2024-25 season at the Lyric Opera House, the company’s 69th season. With the return of the annual holiday “Nutcracker” Highlights include the U.S. premiere of choreographer Cathy Marston’s “Atonement” and Christopher Wheeldon’s adaptation of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”

“Atonement” (October 17-27): British choreographer Marston is known for his literary ballets; Joffrey made it happen “Of mice and men” in 2022 and “Jane Eyre” “Atonement” is Ian McEwan’s reimagining of his 2001 novel (as well as the 2007 film). Set in England on the lead up to World War II, young writer Briony struggles with the consequences of a lie. Music by Laura Rossi.

“The Nutcracker” (December 6-28): Based on the classical music of Tchaikovsky, Wheeldon’s “The Nutcracker” is a new Chicago tradition set at the 1893 World’s Fair.

“Golden Hour” (February 20 – March 2, 2025): A mixed repertory program with music by Jim Stephenson, including the world premiere of choreographer Dani Rowe’s “Princess and the Pea” – set in Pea Town, young Penelopea goes on a quest to save her family. Also Marston’s “Heimat” dance rendition of Wagner’s symphonic poem “Seigfried Idyll”; Nicolas Blanc’s “Under the Voices of the Trees” was adapted into Ezio Bosso’s 2nd Symphony; and the world premiere of Yuri Possokhov with music by Shostakovich.

“Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” (June 5-15, 2025): Wheeldon’s three-act ballet is based on Lewis Carroll’s story. The film, which was a joint commission from The Royal Ballet, premiered in 2011. While Joffrey shows Alice the Chicago premiere with music by Joby Talbot, he meets the high-strung Queen of Hearts and the tap-dancing Mad Hatter.

Other events next year include Joffrey Dance Academy’s “Winning Works” (March 14-23, 2025), Joffrey with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (April 10-13, 2025), and Joffrey on the Ravinia Tour in Highland Park. this coming September.

Three-program subscriptions for fall, winter and spring season productions (excluding “The Nutcracker”) start at $129.
