The private firm that operates Gary Community School Corp. received a $100,000 state incentive award Wednesday for exceeding the graduation rate benchmark at the West Side Leadership Academy.

The state’s Hazardous Unit Appeals Board unanimously approved the incentive award based on West Side’s graduation rate rising from 79% in 2022 to 82.6% in 2023. Last year’s state rate was 89%.

MGT Consulting, a Florida-based company, is in the final months of a $7.8 million, two-year contract to operate the site, which came under state control in 2017. MGT has been managing the region since 2017.

The government based its contracting decisions in part on the success of incentives such as financial, academic and operational improvements.

The latest encouragement comes as school officials admitted they are struggling to increase daily attendance in Gary, which ranks near the bottom of the state.

Assistant principal Mavis Snelson said all Gary schools are below the district’s 90% goal. He said middle school and high school are the most concerning. Attendance has been negatively impacted statewide since the coronavirus pandemic.

Gary hopes to turn the attendance record around with a $500,000 federal community engagement grant that runs through October 2028.

Snelson said the district recently hired a community engagement coordinator who will work with parents and schools on attendance and truancy issues through research-based programs.
