A 20-year-old man from Waukegan, Illinois, who was involved in a chase with deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department on the Indiana Toll Road crashed head-on into a car carrying a family of four on Friday, police said.
The man was transported to the hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries and the family was also taken to the hospital for evaluation, according to a statement from Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr.
Just before 2:10 a.m. on Feb. 16, officers with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department began pursuing the driver of a sedan for traffic violations. The pursuit began on northbound Interstate 65 and continued westbound along the Indiana Toll Road.
At the state border, police officers attempted to maneuver the vehicle to a safe stop, but the driver managed to escape. He began driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic on the Toll Road and ended up crashing head-on into another passenger car.
The suspect’s vehicle was reported stolen in Chicago. The driver is also suspected of fleeing from Hobart police just before Friday’s pursuit.
The investigation into the accident continues.
