LONDON – Sarah, Duchess of York, was diagnosed with malignant skin cancer during treatment for breast cancer, a spokesman said.
The melanoma was found after several moles were removed during reconstructive surgery after a mastectomy. Doctors are doing analysis to see if it was caught early.
“Obviously, another diagnosis so soon after treatment for breast cancer is distressing, but the Duchess remains in good spirits,” the spokesman said.
Sarah, 64, former wife of Prince Andrew and mother of Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, was once a favorite target of Britain’s tabloids. The former Sarah Ferguson, known as “Fergie,” has published her memoirs and written numerous children’s books as well as a historical romance novel for adults.
The announcement comes five days after dual health announcements within the British royal family. Princess Kate of Wales has undergone abdominal surgery and King Henry III. Charles is expected to undergo prostate treatment this week.
