Season 1 as carrier of the ‘NFL Sunday Ticket’ bundle

Jon Cruz still remembers the days when he had to convince the NFL and other sports leagues that uploading key moments to YouTube was valuable.

Less than a decade later, this has become the home of the NFL’s package of non-Sunday Sunday afternoon games on CBS and Fox.

YouTube TV’s first season as the “NFL Sunday Ticket” carrier kicks off Sunday. YouTube signed a seven-year contract with the league in December worth more than $2 billion per season.

YouTube has had an official NFL channel since 2015. This channel has grown to include channels owned by all 32 teams and 10 official league channels, including NFL Films, NFL Network, and Mundo NFL.

YouTube is now taking over the consumer version of “Sunday Ticket” from DirecTV, which has been around since its inception in 1994. DirecTV has a separate agreement to distribute it in bars, restaurants and other establishments.

The move to “Sunday Ticket” to YouTube met a goal for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who wanted the package to go to a streaming service so that it could be made available to more fans. It reached an average of 2 million subscribers per season on DirecTV.

The “Sunday Pass” is available as an add-on pack on YouTube TV or separately on YouTube Primetime Channels. Google said in June that YouTube TV has 5 million subscribers for its service, which includes ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, ESPN, TNT and FS1.

NFL Network and NFL RedZone have been available to YouTube TV subscribers since 2020.

The big question now is whether YouTube is ready for 1pm EDT on Sunday, when fans will log in to stream eight early games. Christian Oestlien, YouTube’s vice president of product, said the last few months have been devoted to ensuring that outages don’t happen.

In late May, YouTube TV experienced widespread blackouts in the first two games of the NBA Eastern Conference finals between the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat.

“We have invested in many ‘Sunday Ticket’ specific infrastructures and many systems to make sure we can identify issues quickly and fix them before they are seen by the end user. “We’ve done a lot of great prep work (during pre-season games) to make sure people have an uninterrupted Sunday.”

The most important feature of the “Sunday Ticket” will be the ability to watch more than one match at the same time. In addition, YouTube TV subscribers will for the first time have the opportunity to watch their local matches alongside the matches on the “Sunday Ticket”.

YouTube TV began multi-viewing at the NCAA basketball tournament in March.

The “Sunday Ticket” will also include live polls and chats. Following a match by watching important matches will only be possible on TV this season.

Although the “Sunday Ticket” is available to more fans, it remains expensive. YouTube TV subscribers can get it for $299, while non-subscribers can get it for $399. The NFL RedZone channel can be added to both packages for an additional $40.

The price is still high due to the size of the contracts CBS and Fox have signed with the league.

YouTube will offer discounted packages to students. Verizon is offering a free “Sunday Pass” to new and existing customers who purchase new phones and sign up for an unlimited plus plan.
