Two-vehicle crashes, both at a former fast food restaurant in Harvey, halted traffic at Sibley Boulevard and South Halsted Street for hours Thursday as firefighters, police and city workers cleared the destruction from the road.
The driver of an SUV lost control and crashed into another car at such speed that both vehicles crashed into the abandoned fast food restaurant at the southeast corner of the intersection, said Crystal Richardson, deputy director of the Harvey Department of Public Works.
A crushed Chrysler SUV was sitting on top of a tow truck across the street; Its front hood was completely crushed and its front axle was bent. The front bumper of a second car was separated from the vehicle in the bushes.
While the crews were trying to clear the cinder blocks from the street, they also directed traffic away from the scene.
The Harvey Police Department and Fire Department could not be reached for comment.
