A human skull was found Wednesday by an excavation team in the East Chicago section of the BP Whiting refinery; This is the third set of artifacts found in the city since the beginning of 2024.

East Chicago police said officers responded to Gate 15 near 298 129th Street around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of human remains on the property, according to a press release. The statement stated that the officers were escorted from Gate 15 towards the excavation site by security personnel.

Police said a crew was digging in the area to perform maintenance on the pipe system and found what appeared to be a human skull on the ground next to the trash can. Officers saw the skull covered in gravel.

The Lake County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force and the Lake County Medical Examiner’s Office arrived at the scene and seized the skull.

At this time, police say the investigation is ongoing and no additional information is available.

BP has not released information about the incident at this time.

On Feb. 4, a man walking in the area of 149th Place and Parrish Boulevard called police after seeing what appeared to be a human skull in a grassy area near the railroad tracks. During subsequent research, the lower jaw of the skull, some of the vertebrae and a jacket were discovered.

Police found the body of 30-year-old Clarissa Almodovar, who was reported missing in 2023, at a home in the 4000 block of Deal Street on Jan. 30, according to a statement from the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
