Say that for Yorkville Christian’s Jayden Riley. He is an excellent driver.

Riley also passes well and rolls with the punches; although not everyone agrees that the 6-foot-10 sophomore quarterback made contact when he rolled to the ground, as he did four times Monday night.

“Jayden is a very good decision maker,” the coach said. Aaron Sovern aforementioned. “We’re working on that shot. I thought he could get to the line a few more times, but it is what it is. He’s a dog.

“They said he fell. I said, ‘When he shoots, they get under his feet.'”

Riley proved his talent for the host Mustangs as they defeated Gardner-South Wilmington 101-88 in the Class 1A Aurora Christian Regional quarterfinals, which turned into a 3-point contest.

With his team leading 68-52 with two minutes left in the third quarter, Riley lost for the last time. He did not return in the final 10 minutes, but still finished with 25 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists for Yorkville Christian (14-17).

“It was like, ‘I’ll go if I have to,’ but I thought as long as we were up 15 points or more we’d keep it there,” Sovern said of the bench. “I hope we have a busy week”

This week continues with the semifinal game against Earlville on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Hinckley-Big Rock and the host Eagles will play the 6th seed in the other semifinal. Friday’s championship game is at 7 p.m.

junior guard Zach Marini The Mustangs, who do not have a senior on their roster, scored a team-high 26 points on Monday.

Led by Marini’s six 3-pointers, Yorkville Christian shot 48% (19 of 40) from beyond the arc.

“I feel like I can go downhill and there are a lot of shooters I can get the ball to,” said Riley, who played for Oswego last season. “We get up and down the field and my game complements everyone else’s game.”

Two seniors led GSW (9-22): guard Cale Halpin with 34 points, including eight 3-pointers, and forward Bennett Grant with 24 points. The Panthers stunned Sovern by making 47% (15 of 32) on threes.

“I saw them play six times and they made threes maybe nine out of six games,” he said. “Part of it was that we didn’t preserve a soul. But they were shooting.

“That’s the most three-pointers we’ve given up all year. “We need to tighten this up even more.”

“The big man doesn’t appear in many game films,” Sovern said of Aguano, who only played in the last nine games due to injury.

Aguano scored just six points but grabbed eight rebounds, five of them offensively, and blocked two shots.

But everything goes through Riley. The Mustangs’ first three baskets came from Riley, two by Purvis and one by Marini.

“He’s a very good player and he’ll find the right guy,” Purvis said. “I’m grateful that he trusted us to throw the ball. Sometimes I wonder ‘How did he do that?’ He makes crazy moves that will make you think.

“He got the ball in the middle and found me for the first shot of the game. “This helps the whole team make their first.”

Riley also thinks there’s more to come.

“It was a fun game, but for us, I think we could have shot the ball a lot better,” Riley said. “I feel like we have another tank in reserve and we can do better.

“I want to focus on myself and try to be a leader defensively as well.”
