Oak Lawn police said an off-duty southwest suburban police sergeant working as a security guard was shot in the leg after intervening in an argument Monday afternoon.
Police said that the attack took place at noon on Monday and that they arrested a suspect who was an employee of the workplace where the incident occurred. In the statement made by the police, it was stated that the suspect argued with other workers at the workplace in the 10800 block of South Central Boulevard, took out his gun and shot the off-duty sergeant nearby.
A second security guard shot the suspect at least once, according to police.
Police said the suspect fired five shots at the off-duty sergeant before his gun jammed, and the off-duty sergeant and the second officer restrained him.
The sergeant was treated for a leg wound at a nearby hospital, while the second officer refused medical aid, police said.
Police said they are investigating the shooting further and will work with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office on charges against the suspect.
