NEW YORK — The reading of the 2024 Oscar nominations has begun.

Actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid announce the nominees for the 96th Academy Awards at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California. Live broadcast presentation oscars.com, oscars.org and was posted on the academy’s social media platforms and broadcast live on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“Oppenheimer,” “Barbie” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” are expected to be the dominant forces on Tuesday, each poised to garner double-digit nominations. “Poor Things” may also receive ten or more nominations. The Academy stated that a record number of voters from 93 countries voted in this year’s nominations. Additionally, many international films such as “Anatomy of a Fall” and “Point of Interest” may also have the best viewing area among the 10 films.

Best Supporting Actor nominees: Sterling K. Brown, “American Fiction”; Robert De Niro, “The Killers of the Flower Moon”; Robert Downey Jr., “Oppenheimer”; Ryan Gosling, “Barbie”; Mark Ruffalo, “Poor Things.”

Christopher Nolan’s three-hour opus “Oppenheimer” became the favorite for best picture, best director and many other awards. Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt are expected to receive rave reviews for their acting, while the film’s craft is expected to be richly rewarded in technical categories. Although Nolan is considered the big-budget director of his era, he has never won an Academy Award and none of his films have won best picture. This could be his year.

Oscar season reunited “Oppenheimer” with its summer box office partner “Barbie.” Greta Gerwig’s feminist blockbuster shouldn’t be far behind “Oppenheimer,” the biggest hit of the year with over $1.4 billion in ticket sales. It goes on to earn best picture, best director, acting nominations for Ryan Gosling and possibly Margot Robbie, and possibly two best singing nominations for “What Was I Made For” and “I’m Just Ken.” Although Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s script was cited as original, the academy counts it in the adapted category.

The academy’s best picture slot could replicate the 10 films nominated by the Producers Guild: “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “The Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Poor Things,” “The Holdovers,” “Maestro,” “American Fiction,” “One Anatomy of the Fall,” “Past Lives,” and “Sphere of Interest.”

If the Oscars’ top category seems locked in, many of the other categories have plenty of wiggle room. In the competitive top player field, it is inevitable that many deserving candidates will be rejected. Murphy, Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”) and Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”) are narrow favorites, but there’s room for Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Colman staying. Domingo (“Rustin”) and Andrew Scott (“We Are All Strangers”).

Lily Gladstone is expected to become the first Native American to be nominated for best actress for her performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Her toughest rival is probably Emma Stone, who is expected to receive her fourth Oscar nomination for her performance in Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Poor Things.” Also in the mix: Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Margot Robbie (“Barbie”) and Annette Bening (“Nyad”).

One of the biggest locks of the morning belongs to Da’Vine Joy Randolph. The lead actress of “Holdovers” is seen as the clear favorite in the supporting actress category. She may also be joined by some combination of Blunt, Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”), Jodie Foster (“Nyad”), Julianne Moore (“May December”) or Penélope Cruz (“Ferrari”).

One of the most prominent Barbenheimer battles is the supporting actor race. Downey Jr. there. and Gosling are likely in the running, while other candidates could include Robert De Niro (“The Killers of the Flower Moon”), Willem Dafoe (“Poor Things”), Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”). Charles Melton (“May December”).

Historically, blockbuster movies have helped boost Oscar ratings. Although the backlog of award shows (an effect of last year’s strikes) is detrimental to the Academy Awards, Barbenheimer’s presence could help boost the March 10 broadcast on ABC. Jimmy Kimmel returns as host and the ceremony is moved up one hour to 7pm Eastern.
