David Soul, who played Detective Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson in the TV series “Starsky & Hutch,” died on Thursday, his wife told the BBC. He was 80 years old.

After more guest roles, Soul landed the biggest role of his career in “Starsky & Hutch” as Sergeant David Michael Starsky alongside Paul Michael Glaser. The duo played Southern California police detectives, first in a pilot in 1975 and then in a weekly TV series that aired on ABC until 1979.
Starsky and Hutch drove around in their iconic red-and-white-striped Ford Gran Torino, and there was a brotherly love, us-against-the-world attitude that was different from typical cop shows. Overly affectionate cop buddies became a ’70s staple, often the punchline to erotic jokes. Even Glaser later admitted that Starsky and Hutch had some “homoerotic elements.”
“I think it’s important to understand that, yes, there are homoerotic elements,” he told Page Six in 2021. “I guess the truth is that David and I are mostly heterosexual – if you have to define yourself – but you have to be able to accept that there’s a little bit of homoerotic in all of us.”
