Waubonsie Valley star Tyreek Coleman hit a three-pointer and then made perhaps the sweetest play of the game.

The 6-foot-11 right-handed junior guard drove the left baseline and scored on a reverse layup with his left hand to give the Warriors a six-point lead over Downers Grove North in the Class 4A East Aurora Regional semifinals. Wednesday.

“The pressure was on them and we stunned them,” said Coleman. “They were making careless mistakes. “We just took advantage of them.”

Coleman’s layup gave the third-ranked Warriors a 14-8 lead with 5:27 left in the second quarter. When you’re a young striker Cade Valek The Warriors appeared to be in good shape when they stole the ball from Downers Grove North.

Then things got ugly. The Warriors scored just four baskets the rest of the way as second-seeded Downers Grove North patiently pulled off a 41-28 win.

“They slowed down, made some big shots and we couldn’t put the ball in the basket – and then they took the lead,” Coleman said.

Senior guard Alex Miller scored a game-high 15 points for the Trojans, who advanced to the regional finals with just five players against top-seeded Bolingbrook (30-4) on Friday. 6-7 senior center Jake Riemer, with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, was so dominant in rebounding that he single-handedly out-rebounded the Warriors, who had just two offensive rebounds and eight total rebounds.

“We knew a bear was coming,” Waubonsie Valley coach Andrew Schweitzer said. “But I told these kids they were going to be upset for a day or two, but in the end we’re going to look back on this season and realize we accomplished things that haven’t been done at this school in almost a quarter of a century. So I’m really proud of the group.”

The Warriors (27-3) fell one win short of breaking the program record. Three starters – guard/forward Treshawn Blissett and forward Ryan Morton And Matthew Sessom – will graduate. However, three key youngsters return: Coleman, Valek and guard/forward. Moses Wilson.

“No one saw us coming,” Schweitzer said. “There are some guys in that room who are seniors who are going to go on and do great things, but I also think there are some guys in that room who are going to come back motivated next year.”

The most motivated will likely be Coleman, who scored a team-high eight points against Downers Grove North.

“We had a great group of guys,” Coleman said. “We were almost like family from day one. Every day at practice was fun. “When we got on the field together, we knew what we had to do.”

The Warriors made a lot of great memories and a lot of wins.

“We treated each other well, knew each other’s strengths,” said Coleman. “All in all, we had a great season. We didn’t get the result we wanted tonight.”

But it wasn’t for lack of effort on the part of Coleman, who impressed Schweitzer with his emergence as a leader this season.

“He took his game to the next level in terms of doing great things on the court,” Schweitzer said. “I guarantee he’s ranked No. 1 on every other team’s scouting report. You saw their whole game plan tonight was to stop him.

“But more importantly to me, he took the next step as a leader. He refuses to give up. Even at that last minute he was still rallying the troops and taking the losses as much as anyone else.”

There is no doubt about it.

“I definitely always beat myself up after a loss,” Coleman said. “I thought I could have done a lot more out there tonight to get the upper hand on my guys.

“Overall, I had a good year. I got a little exposure, got a little bit taller and stronger, so now it’s just improving, getting better every day. AAU is coming up, so I want to improve on that.”

Schweitzer is already looking forward to Coleman’s senior season.

“He’s a competitor,” Schweitzer said. “A child friend I could trust at that moment. So he’s a really nice building block for next year, obviously.”

Coleman is also optimistic.

“Next year will definitely be a good year,” he said. “I know the guys will come hungry next year. We know what it feels like to win, to be a good team and to fight.”
