Addi Lowe ends super season with Batavia

Undoubtedly, the senior guard Addi Lowe Batavia has experienced a slight decline in shooting this season.

Monday night he was determined to turn that situation around.

“I didn’t have three this year,” Lowe said. “I hesitated whether to shoot or not.

“(Monday) ‘Why not, let’s let it fly?’ I thought. This has been paid.”

Lowe cut Fremd’s lead to one point in the third quarter of Monday’s Class 4A Bartlett Supersectional, hitting 3-of-5 3-pointers to help the Bulldogs move closer to cashing in.

But Fremd pulled away in the fourth quarter, ending Batavia’s deepest postseason streak with a 65-46 decision.

Brooke Carlson He scored 19 points and Lowe scored 15 points for Batavia (29-6). Ella Todd outperformed Fremd (29-6) with 21 points, while Coco Urlacher played with 14 points and 16 rebounds.

Lowe and Hallie Crane made back-to-back three-pointers in the third round to make it 15-4 and put the Bulldogs ahead 36-35.

However, Fremd took the lead 41-37 with Ellie Thompson’s three-pointer towards the end of the quarter. This sparked a decisive 18-2 burst that restarted play.

“I felt like we had a lot of energy,” Lowe said. “Fremd is a good team, they support them. They were really well prepared and managed to turn the situation around.”

Batavia coach Kevin Jensen He said he had a hunch Lowe was going to have a big game on Monday.

“I told them before the game, I have a feeling Addi is going to hit the big three,” Jensen said. “He hasn’t shot the ball very well all year. It was due. He buried a couple.

“I’m so happy for him.”

Carlson said the third quarter was indicative of how the Bulldogs wanted to play in a closer game than the final score indicated.

“I feel like they play with a different intensity,” Carlson said. “I think we played like us in the third quarter, but we started the match not playing like ourselves. We’ve gotten ourselves into a slump.

“We still came close to one and showed that everyone can play.”

The 6-foot-4 Lowe averaged just 3.6 points in Monday’s game, but that doesn’t reflect his true value to the team.

“He’s kind of the cornerstone for us,” Jensen said. “He protects the ball very well. Even with his size, he can defend almost anyone and he did it again (Monday).

“He was playing as physical as he could and was really proud of him.”

Carlson was happy to see Lowe finish his Batavia career on such a high note.

“Addi had a great game,” Carlson said. “He’s been our defensive player all year. It’s great to see him shooting since he’s been in a bit of a scoring slump.

“He did it and it was amazing to see.”

The Bulldogs made the deepest run in program history to win their first regional title. Jensen said their legacy will be felt in much more than just their accomplishments on the field.

“I don’t think these seniors realize the foundation they’re laying for years to come,” Jensen said. “I know this is a historic run for us, I wish it could have been a little further but we got to a point where the margins were very small.

“At the end of the day, it became a night and they caught us.”

Lowe also knows he and his fellow seniors are making their mark.

“This year has been the best year I’ve ever had,” Lowe said. “This team is the closest I’ve ever had. We all love each other very much. I think everyone will want to continue this legacy next year.

“These memories will last forever.”
