Super season for Madison Davis and Marian Catholic

Madison Davis opened her college career with Marian Catholic wearing a mask because it was required during the coronavirus pandemic.

The senior guard, who is headed to Western Illinois, ended his four-year college career with tissue in his nose Monday night after taking a hit to his elbow in the closing minutes of his final game.

But there were plenty of points, rebounds, steals, assists, and most importantly, wins in between the mask and the tissue before he saw the door to his high school career close.

“It was an honor to play here,” Davis said of Marian Catholic. “These were the best four years of my life. The girls have been great teammates. To play under coach (And) MurrayIt was an honor to be a Hall of Fame coach.

“These have been the best four years of my life to be able to contribute and leave a mark that I have ever had, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world.”

That season, the Spartans lost 36-30 to the host Hornets in the Class 3A Hinsdale South Supersectional in Darien.

Davis finished the game with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals for Marian Catholic (28-8). Gracie Jensen added 10 rebounds and LaParis Poe contributed seven.

Hinsdale South (26-10) continued its lead with 15 points from Amelia Lavorato. The Hornets will normally face Chatham Glenwood at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the state semifinals at Illinois State’s CEFCU Arena.

Marian, who made 12 of 44 shots, was caught up the rest of the game Monday night and struggled to put together a big run.

When Davis put his elbow to his nose, he ran off the field as fast as he could to get help and missed only one play.

“I wanted to keep pushing,” Davis said. “I knew that if we were going to be defeated, I would be on the field fighting until the end. If someone were to knock us down, I would be on the field and give it my all.”

Murray appreciates everything Davis has brought to the program over the past four years.

“Obviously it means a lot,” Murray said. “He does a lot on the field. He’s definitely one of the best actors ever through Marian, there’s no doubt about that.

“When he’s gone, little kids are going to have to step up.”

Murray also enjoyed watching his leadership skills develop.

“He was a little more vocal than in the past,” Murray said of this season. “He is a great example in terms of his work ethic and the way he conducts his business on a daily basis.

“He is exactly the type of kid you want.”

Hinsdale South coach Scott Tanaka knew Davis needed to be slowed down, so he placed his best defender, sophomore Maeve Savage, in place of Davis.

“I think he’s the best defenseman in the state,” Tanaka said of Savage. “He had a mission and I thought he did a great job at it.”

This is the third straight season Marian has reached the round, and also the third time the Spartans have left in disappointment.

In 2022, they lost to Morton in Streator, 49-40. Last season they dropped a tough 37-34 decision to Peoria in Pontiac.

Meanwhile, Davis’ next stop will be Macomb to play for Western Illinois.

“They’ve been very supportive of me,” Davis said of the Leathernecks’ coaching staff. “They came to every AAU tournament I played in. You could tell I was really wanted there.

“One of the things my father (John) said is that you go to a place where you are truly wanted. I can’t wait to play for them.”
