Aurora City Council to vote on $3.6 million bid package for new Public Works building

The Aurora City Council is set to vote on a package of proposals worth nearly $3.6 million for more work on the new Public Works building.

Bids are being submitted for seven commercial suites for work on the building near Liberty Street and County Farm Road on the city’s far East Side.

The bids are for changes to the original plan, primarily to construct the second floor of the building to house the city’s Engineering Department. There will also be a mother’s room for employees.

The councilman put approval of the purchase order through the project manager, Aurora-based RC Wegman Construction Company, on the approval agenda for Tuesday’s City Council meeting, meaning it will likely be approved.

“This is the third major bid package and the last,” said Ken Schroth, the city’s public works director. He said there are still a few smaller bid packages coming for some smaller parts of the project.

The new Public Works building will host five of the 16 departments within the Public Works Department.

It will include some offices, a maintenance area for city vehicles, some truck storage, and a refueling station for city vehicles, including police cars. There will also be a salt dome to store road salt for the winter.

Councilors have already approved several major bid packages for the project.

A $17.7 million bid package for work on the project was estimated at $22 million to $25.5 million by Aurora-based RC Wegman.

The other bid package was $9.2 million for site grading, site development and salt dome construction with Berger Excavation Contractors.

“So far we are still below the budget estimate,” Schroth said.

He added that the building could be substantially completed by December, with the hope that the building would be fully occupied by the second quarter of 2025.
