Good morning Chicago.

union address A forum that almost always favors the speaker in a one-way conversation with millions of Americans is one of the durable parts of the presidency.

Most conversations are instantly fragmented and forgotten almost as quickly. But this is a very unusual year, as President Joe Biden must show not only that his policies warrant a second term, but also that, at age 81, he has the personal capacity to do the job.

He criticized former President Donald Trump for the January 6 insurrection and the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v., with the justices present. He pursued his decision overturning the Wade case and laid out the clear lines of the upcoming campaign.

Also the shrinking size of the Snickers bar.

Hybrid elected Chicago school board plan now in Governor JB Pritzker’s hands

Legislation spelling out the Chicago school board’s inaugural selection process is in Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s hands after the Illinois House approved a measure calling for half the 20-member board to be elected in November and the other half to be appointed by the mayor. The full panel wasn’t decided by voters for another two years.

By a 75-31 vote, the House adopted the same hybrid model of elected board that it introduced to the House during the fall veto session. That proposal was delayed as the Senate moved forward with its own plan to elect the entire board in a first-round vote.

Food pantries in Chicago face unprecedented demand amid immigration crisis

For most nonprofit food distributors, waiting in line for hours has become the norm. Food pantries in Chicago are grappling with an unprecedented wave of demand driven at least in part by an influx of immigrants in the city, forcing some to cut services.

Many pantries have reduced their monthly allotment of visits to expand supply. Others ration food items offered to guests.

Harris relies on personal story in state attorney’s speech

Cook County state’s attorney candidate Clayton Harris III made a personal pitch for the Democratic nomination in the upcoming primary to a small crowd at the City Club on Thursday afternoon.

Rivian to start production of second-generation R2 electric SUV in Normal as plans for Georgia factory are delayed

Rivian unveiled its highly anticipated downsized R2 electric SUV on Thursday with a few big surprises.

To bring the R2 to market faster, Rivian will begin producing its second-generation EVs at its factory in Normal, where the first full-size R1 line has been in production since 2021. Meanwhile, he plans to build a $5 billion Georgia. A company spokesman said the facility to build the R2 was “delayed.”

Aldi plans to add 800 discount grocery stores across the U.S. in its five-year expansion plan to capitalize on cost-conscious Americans feeling the pinch on grocery stores.

Chicago detects first measles case in 5 years

The source of infection in the Chicago case is unknown, but the infectious period ended Wednesday, Chicago public health officials said.

United Airlines plane makes a safe emergency landing in Los Angeles after losing a tire during takeoff

A United Airlines jetliner bound for Japan made a safe landing in Los Angeles on Thursday after losing a tire while taking off from San Francisco.

Bears continue talks with suburban schools even as they pursue a city stadium

A source familiar with the project said recently that the Bears were looking at an indoor lakefront stadium in the parking lots just south of their current home, Soldier Field. They are working with Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office, Sidley Austin law firm and investment bank Goldman Sachs on a potential public-private partnership. Specific details about such a project for the Bears could be announced soon, the source said.

‘Monumental’ spotlights Oscar Dunn, the first Black lieutenant governor elected in Louisiana and the US

Brian K. Mitchell is a source of information on Black history, so it’s no surprise that he’s connected to history. Mitchell is a descendant of Oscar James Dunn, who was the first Black lieutenant governor elected in Louisiana and the United States. Dunn was elected in 1868 and eventually served as lieutenant governor for 39 days, a term that lasted until 1871.

Dunn’s life is the focus of Mitchell’s graphic novel “Monumental: Oscar Dunn and the Radical Struggle in Louisiana Reconstruction.” Mitchell learned Dunn’s story when he was 8 years old from an oral history his great-grandmother gave him while living with relatives in New Orleans after leaving Chicago.
