West Dundee fire captain loses battle with cancer at 46

West Dundee Fire Department Captain Dan Kilian died of cancer on Sunday, March 10.

Kilian, 46, started with the West Dundee department in 2005, was promoted to lieutenant in 2022 and captain in 2023, according to a press release. During his tenure, Kilian held a variety of roles, including union president, EMS coordinator, and member of the Kane County Fire Investigators Task Force.

According to the GoFundMe page, Kilian was diagnosed with colon cancer in January 2023. www.gofundme.com/f/urgent-need-support-captain-dan-kilians-familyIt was founded by West Dundee Fire Chief Michael Spiro for Kilian’s wife and 7-year-old son. A setback in January forced him to stop chemotherapy, and the cancer was determined to be terminal in early March, the fundraising site said.

Spiro said in his statement that Kilian’s death left a void both professionally and personally.

“His leadership, compassion and unwavering commitment to his fellow firefighters and the community left an unforgettable mark on all who knew him,” he said. “The West Dundee Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to the Kilian family during this incredibly challenging time.”
